Unwanted belly fat

NaturalHealth365 dated 10 November 2018 published this information on vitamin D article “Research shows that low vitamin D levels are linked to unwanted belly fat  Here is an excerpt:

“You are probably aware that vitamin D deficiency is bad news for bone health, and additionally expose you to risks such as obesity, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  But, what you might not know is that the bigger your belly is, the higher the chances that you have low vitamin D levels.

These new findings were presented in Barcelona during the European Society of Endocrinology annual meeting.   So, the word is getting out.  We just have to encourage doctors to study the medical literature.”

Do you suffer from IBS – Good news contained herein

NaturalHealth 365 dated 12 April 2018 published this article “Vitamin D deficiency linked to more painful digestive health problems.”  An excerpt from the article:

Vitamin D is integral to immune system health, bone health, brain functioning and fighting cancer. Now new research out of the University of Sheffield Department of Oncology and Metabolism has found that optimal vitamin D levels can help to ease painful IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) symptoms as well.

IBS (sometimes called IBD – Irritable Bowel Disease) is a painful condition that affects about 3 million people in the United States and two out of every 10 people in the UK. It is a functional disorder of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract, and in some cases can be quite debilitating.  Yet, we know there are many natural ways to eliminate digestive health problems.

It should be noted that IBS tends to be the catalyst for around 10 percent of all GP surgical clinic visits. Plus, this avoidable health problem causes many to miss work and greatly lower overall quality of life.”

This information on vitamin d article also advises “Vitamin D levels of around 40 ng/mL ideal for supporting optimal health”.     Please make sure you read the full article.

Marilyn Vine uses a Vitamin D as cholecalciferol supplement in the quantity of 400 iu.    To learn more about this supplement and to purchase same click here.

Top articles on Vitamin D

Top Twelve Vitamin D Papers for 2017”.  The article goes on to say:

“While the importance of vitamin D for calcium absorption and metabolism and bone health was recognized about a century ago, its importance for non-skeletal effects has only been generally recognized and appreciated in this century. Most of the supporting evidence is either from observational studies related to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations, including prospective studies, or studies of vitamin D mechanisms, with some of the evidence coming from clinical trials. Indirect support comes from the fact that skin pigmentation varies globally in response to prevailing solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) doses as modified by clouds and forest cover, and that nearly every cell in the body has vitamin D receptors. Most of the effects of vitamin D are mediated through the hormonal metabolite of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, binding to a vitamin D receptor and affecting gene expression, upregulating some, downregulating others; the production of this metabolite in target tissues being regulated mainly through the availability of 25(OH)D in the circulation and by local production of the catabolic 24(OH)ase enzyme [Ganguly, 2017]. However, in order for the health systems to recommend higher serum 25(OH)D concentrations appropriate for non-skeletal effects, clinical trials are required. The year 2017 saw some progress along this front.”

Vitamin D and Infertility

NaturalNews dated 26 December 2017 published this information on vitamin d article: “Vitamin D fights disease and infertility: New study finds women with PCOS have a higher success rate with vitamin D”.    The information on Vitamin D article goes on to say:

“Trying to conceive might sound exciting on the surface, but it can quickly turn into a source of frustration for women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. This hormonal disorder, which affects five to 10 percent of women who are at the age of reproduction, often causes infertility because of a lack of ovulation, among other effects. Many of these women end up seeking fertility treatment to help improve their chances.”

Vitamin D’s role in lowering cancer risk

Dr Mercola on 10 April 2017 published an article entitled “Higher Vitamin D Levels Lower Cancer Risk”.   His story at a glance:

“Vitamin D is involved in the biology of all cells in your body, including your immune cells. A large number of studies have shown raising your vitamin D level can significantly reduce your risk of cancer

Most recently, researchers found vitamin D and calcium supplementation lowered participants’ overall cancer risk by 30 percent

Having a serum vitamin D level of at least 40 ng/mL reduces your risk for cancer by 67 percent compared to having a level of 20 ng/ml or less; most cancers occur in people with a vitamin D level between 10 and 40 ng/mL

Powerful prevention for colds and flu

NaturalNews dated 5 April 2017 published an article entitled “Better than vaccines? Vitamin D found to be powerful prevention vs. colds and flu”  The article goes on to say:

Researchers at the Queen Mary University of London found that vitamin D supplementation keep respiratory diseases such as cough and colds at bay. Data show that vitamin D supplementation resulted in a 12 percent reduction in the proportion of patients suffering at least one acute respiratory tract infection. Researchers also noted that vitamin D supplementation helped keep respiratory infections in check, especially among vitamin deficient individuals. To asses this the scientists examined more than 11,000 patients who participated in 25 clinical trials across 14 countries, including the U.K., India, Afghanistan, and Japan as well Belgium, Italy, Australia, Canada and the U.S.”

Absolute importance of Vitamin D

NaturalHealth365 on 22 February 2015 brings more information on Vitamin D and on how low doses of this vitamin in your system cause higher mortality rates.  The article goes on to say:

“Last June, in the Journal of Public Health, after analyzing 32 vitamin D studies over a 40 year period of time, researchers suggested that risk of premature death from any cause was significantly higher when vitamin D levels fell below 30 mg/nl.

Now, another 13-year prospective study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirms these findings. This study’s perspective highlighted premature death from cardiovascular disease, cancers, fracture and respiratory disease with chronically low vitamin D levels.”

Vitamin D2, D3 and D4

GreenMedia on 7 August 2015 brings a great deal of information on Vitamin D and the humble mushroom with regards to its vitamin D content.   It is very interesting reading and I was delighted to learn that the Shitake Mushroom not only produce vitamin D2 but also produce vitamin D3 and vitamin D4.  WOW!    Click this link to read the article.

I recently started to make a Shitake and Chicken Mushroom soup and have this most days with a Cruskit spread with Avocado.

Chicken, Shiitake and Bok Choy Soup - 6 serves

  • 8 cups canned low-salt chicken broth
  • 6 ounces fresh shiitake mushrooms (about 10 large), stemmed, caps sliced
  • 2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger
  • 3 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oriental sesame oil*
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili oil*
  • 3 cups thinly sliced bok choy
  • 4 teaspoons rice vinegar*
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Bring broth, mushrooms and ginger to boil in large pot. Reduce heat and simmer 3 minutes. Add fish sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil and chilli oil and simmer 2 minutes. Add bok choy and simmer until bok choy is tender, about 2 minutes. Stir in rice vinegar. Season soup to taste with salt and pepper.  Ladle soup into bowls. Sprinkle with green onions and serve

I put cut up chicken thighs into the broth and cook until the chicken is tender and then I follow the recipe.  I also add the spring onions to the soup as I freeze some of this away for future meals.   I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

On a personal level I soak my chicken pieces in a product called OrganiCleanse™ to help remove any toxins that may be contained therein.   I find that if I do this prior to cooking the broth that the top of my broth remains pretty clear.  If I do not do this soaking then I am having to ladle a dark yellow scum off the top of the broth.   If you wish to learn more about this please email me at

Mushrooms  Can they help in preventing breast cancer

Getting your Vitamin D levels tested

Dr Mercola on 7 July 2014 brings a YouTube discussing whether you should get your Vitamin D levels tested on a regular basis.   Personally I believe that this is very good information on Vitamin D as so many diseases are related to low levels of this important vitamin.   Here is an excerpt of what Dr Mercola says in this article

Vitamin D has a number of potent anticancer effects, including the promotion of cancer cell death, known as apoptosis, and the inhibition of angiogenesis (the growth of blood vessels that feed a tumor)

A recent study links vitamin D optimization to improved cancer prognosis among those with a family history of cancer—regardless of the type of cancer involved—and a reduced risk of death from any cause

Vitamin D Supplementation

Is it good for you?   NaturalNews on 2 July 2014 provides information on Vitamin D on this very subject.   Advising how Vitamin D is obtained from the sun and where you live, how often you are out in the sun, your age, your color, your weight all has a bearing on how much you might receive.  The article goes on further to advise you of the benefits of having your Vitamin D at the right level.   Please click this link to read the article and this link for information on Vitamin D supplement that I use

Sunlight and Breast Cancer

GreenMedia on 1 January 2015 provides information on a new study published in the “The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology identifies an overlooked root cause of breast cancer (cancer stem cells), as well as a natural intervention that has yet to be incorporated into the conventional standard of cancer care.”   Here is an excerpt and it is suggested that you take the time to read the full article (download here)

Titled, "Vitamin D compounds reduce mammosphere formation and decrease expression of putative stem cell markers in breast cancer," the new study brings to the forefront the role of breast cancer stem cells (BSCs) in breast tumor formation and their progression towards malignancy and treatment resistance. For many decades it was assumed that cancer results from DNA-damaged cells succumbing to fundamentally chaotic processes, 'going rogue' and reproducing clonally (making identical copies of one another), without an acknowledgment of the different types of cells that comprise tumors. The most salient difference is between the cancer stem cells (sometimes referred to as 'mother' cells) which are capable of theoretically infinite self-renewal and produce all the differentiated 'daughter' cells in a tumor colony, which themselves are not capable of living indefinitely. It is actually the existence of the much smaller number of cancer stem cells which causes cancer recurrence, as they are not only resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiation, but their numbers can actually be increased (enriched) by these two 'therapies.' Therefore, any cancer therapy that ignores the cancer stem cell subpopulation in favor of killing the non-tumorigenic daughter cells in order to 'debulk' the tumor (i.e. shrink it), will not result in destroying the root of the cancer. To the contrary, it can generate the illusion of 'remission' while in fact making the remaining tumor colony far more malignant, setting up the conditions for aggressive recurrence years later.

Marilyn Vine always feels good when she can provide good information on Vitamin D that may help save a life.

Heart Disease, Alzheimer’s and Diabetes

Fallacy that sun exposure should be avoided

Dr Mercola on 21 July 2014 provides information on the dis-information put out with regards to sun exposure and your Vitamin D levels.   In this article he advises:

When UVB strikes the surface of your skin, your skin converts a cholesterol derivative into vitamin D3, which is critical for overall health and disease prevention

As a general rule of thumb, to optimize your vitamin D levels, you need to expose large portions of your skin to the sun – including your legs, back, arms, and chest, but avoid your face to reduce photoaging wrinkling

Please read the full article to really understand information on Vitamin D and its importance to your health.

Never to old to learn

Today Green Media taught me something with regards to mushrooms that I never knew but had unknowingly been doing.    With all the fresh produce that comes into my home I soak in a product to remove 98% of the herbicides and pesticides.   I have had some amazing experiences with soaking my mushrooms and have had to throw many of them out as they turned brown or had huge big black marks on them.   I now know that these marks are the toxic substances coming to the surface.    I am also now very selective in my purchasing of mushrooms.   I pick each mushroom individually and try and buy the whitest ones I can – ones without any slight brown blemish on them – as this is what generally turns black when I soak them.

Now to the reason why I have written this in my information on Vitamin D page.

GreenMedia on 10 July 2014 advise us “Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that boosts the immune system and plays vital roles in human metabolism. Did you know that tasty mushrooms are one source for vitamin D, and that you can naturally multiply their levels by exposing them to sunlight?”

One of the steps I take after soaking my mushrooms is to place them on a table in our conservatory to dry in the sunlight!    Click this link to read the Green Media article.

Bone fractures and low Vitamin D levels

NaturalNews brings information on vitamin d dated 17 April 2014 that science proves that low levels of Vitamin D lead to bone fractures.   The article goes on to say:

A new study out of Scandinavia has affirmed the importance of maintaining high vitamin D levels for healthy bones. Researchers from Sweden, after observing more than 1,000 elderly women over a 10-year evaluation period, learned that those who maintained consistent blood levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) above 50 nanomoles per liter (nmol/l) had nearly half the risk of suffering a bone fracture or osteoporosis compared to those with less than 50 nmol/l of 25OHD.”

I use a product daily that helps to maintain my Vitamin D levels plus Selenium (Influence) Sisel-products on a daily basis.

More effective than flu vaccine

Prevent Disease brings us information dated 22 October 2013 advising that Vitamin D is proven more effective than both anti viral drugs and vaccines at preventing the flu.

This makes absolute sense to me, Marilyn Vine, as I continually say on my vaccination pages:

Why would anyone over-ride their natural immune system with a vaccine that contains so many dreadful ingredients?

Why would you not boost the health of your immune system by making sure that your body has the right nutrients so that it can defend itself against any onslaught that may come your way?

It may hold the key to aggressive breast cancer prevention and treatment

24 July 2013 NaturalNews brings an article advising that:

Scientists know that women who are born with BRCA1 gene mutation are at increased risk for developing breast and ovarian cancers within their lifetime and the tumors that arise are frequently the triple-negative type. Genetic expression has been identified as the primary pathway that allows tumor cells to grow unchecked. The study team identified how vitamin D plays a role in turning off this pathway, providing a safe and effective strategy to fight these types of tumors.”
