Wolfberry (Lycium barbarum)

Marilyn Vine brings you information on Wolfberry Lycium barbarum L.which comes from the Ningxia Hui region of China. It is a small red, medicinal berry that is referred to as Lycii fructus or in the West of China as wolfberry and Gou qui zi (Goji) in the rest of China. This small fruit has a history going back 5,000 years to the Ming Dynasty (1468-1664 A.D.). It is even used today in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and recommended to people with diabetes, vision, liver and kidney deficiencies.

Because of the isolation (geographically) of the people living on the Yellow River this small red berry remained relatively unknown to the rest of the world.

According to Wikipedia it is known as:

”Wolfberry, commercially called goji berry, is the common name for the fruit of two very closely related species: Lycium barbarum (Chinese: 寧夏枸杞; pinyin: Níngxià gǒuqǐ) and L. chinense (Chinese: 枸杞; pinyin: gǒuqǐ), two species of boxthorn in the family Solanaceae (which also includes the potato, tomato, eggplant, deadly nightshade, chili pepper, and tobacco). It is native to southeastern Europe and Asia. Ref 1. It is also known asChinese wolfberry, mede berry, barbary matrimony vine, bocksdorn, Duke of Argyll's tea tree, Murali (in India), (Ref 2) red medlar, ormatrimony vine. (ref3). Unrelated to the plant's geographic origin, the names Tibetan goji and Himalayan goji are in common use in the health food market for products from this plant.”

Research was undertaken at Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai Medical University in Shanghai in China with regard to L-arginine’s stimulation of healthy immunity and may be amplified when combined with another amino acid found in the Ningxia wolfberries; L-glutamine.

They concluded that early post operative enteral feeding is safe in patients who have undergone major operations for gastrointestinal cancer. Click on the link to read the research.

Yellow River, China

The Yellow River in China is a flood plain area and this is a major contributing factor in the rich mineral profile of the Ningxia wolfberry. The water for the Yellow River flows through mountain gorges and valleys and in doing so becomes charged with minerals. When it reaches the Ningxia Province of Northern China it has become mineral-rich silt water. This high concentration is how the Yellow River gained its name from the coloration of the water.

Many of you will understand the huge significance of having the right ratio of minerals and vitamins in the body to maintain your health. Some of you may be unaware that the right mineral is required to enable assimilation of vitamins into the body i.e. the minerals work as a catalyst for the particular vitamin. You may also be aware that in many countries of the world, soil is mineral-deficient and the minerals are not in the food. Plants cannot manufacture minerals. Their mineral intake is from the soil they are grown in and therefore much of our food is deficient of this vital substance. It is interesting to know that the Ningxia wolfberry contains many of these vitamin-mineral pairs which allow assimilation to take place.

Minerals are extremely important for every process in the body including:

  • Electrolyte balance of our cells
  • Nerve conduction for muscle contraction
  • Bone and teeth formation, and
  • enzyme activation.
