Marilyn Vine has come across a great deal of information with regard to keeping Mums and fetuses safe. On a tape Marilyn listened to many years ago, the Late Dr Robert Atkins advised that harm to the fetus occurred within the first 35 days of the fetus’s life through food they were ingesting and personal care and household products that they were using! Just how many women would be aware of their actual conception time and to know to be careful for that first 35 days? For many years it was thought that the skin acted as a barrier to protect us and now they know that this is not correct and that things can readily pass through our skin and into our blood stream or organs.

What this means for the health of the fetus is:

• Both women and men need to be aware of what they are ingesting. If they are ingesting foods that contain toxic chemicals or pesticides, then this is going to not only affect their own health but the health of the unborn fetus.
• Both women and men need to be aware of what they are using externally on their bodies. A great many shampoos, deodorants, mouth washes etc can cross the skin barrier and either enter our blood system or organs of the body and have a harmful effect.
• Mens health - men might ask – why do men have to worry as it is the woman who carries the fetus? Well many of the toxins mentioned above are endocrine disrupters and can affect the male sperm.
• Even in the home and your office – you need to be aware of the chemicals being used around you. People need to be selective in what they choose to do their cleaning with. When you start to learn information on essential oils you will find that many of them can be used as substitute cleaning products and guess what they are safe and can make your home smell heavenly.
• Dishwashing detergent – are you aware that most dishwashing detergents are safe if used in cold water but when hot water is added they give off toxins? Because you lean over your kitchen sink whilst you do dishes the toxins go straight up your olfactory system (through your nose) and directly into your brain!
• Good Medicine Magazine in April 1999 published an article called Are Cosmetics Poisoning You? This article covered sunscreens, red dyes, hair dyes and perm solutions, Toluene in nail polish, antiperspirants, Lanolin – so a lot of very useful information has been available for many years.

The Australian Daily Telegraph on Wednesday 16 July 2003 had as a front page item Shampoo can damage unborn sons. The article went on to say:

A COMMON chemical, used in a range of products from shampoo to plastics, may cause infertility in boys while they are still in the womb, it emerged yesterday. Mothers-to-be may unwittingly be putting their sons at risk of defective sex organs, low sperm counts and even cancer, by washing their hair or using make-up. Substances called phthalates used in shampoos, conditioners, skin lotions and make-up are linked to an increased rate of abnormalities and infertility. ….
