Is the Rise in Male Oral Cancer Related to HPV?
Human papillomavirus (HPV), the sexually transmitted virus that can cause cervical cancer in women, has been linked to an increase in throat, tonsil and tongue cancer in younger men. While these diseases were once associated with older men who have smoked and drank heavily for most of their life, head and neck cancer brought on by HPV are now occurring among men in their 40s and 30s. How to Use Soft Drinks to Kill Mice and Rats
If you have a problem with mice or rats, one way to get rid of them is with soda pop. Mice and rats lack the ability to burp. You can use this to your advantage. Simply pour Pepsi or Coke into a shallow dish, and place the dish near where the mice or rats are entering your home. The rodents will drink the sweet soft drink and later, when they can't burp, they will die. Right next to walls usually works best for any type of bait or traps, as does under sinks, where they may like to hide out, or underneath your stove. As the carbonation only lasts just so long, you will need to keep that in mind and refill your dish accordingly. Try putting a new dish down each night before bed. Medicine’s Dirty Little Secret
What an interesting article! If people knew these statistics and the side effects of what they are taking I wonder how many of them would actually make the decision to continue? There's one medical statistic doctors don't much talk about despite its importance. It's called number needed to treat, or NNT. It’s a measure developed in the past 20 years, and it’s one of the best-kept statistical secrets in medicine.

The idea of NNT is simple enough. Most clinical trials look at how much better people do on a particular medicine. NNT answers the question: How many people have to take a particular drug to avoid one incidence of a medical issue (such as a heart attack, or recurrence of cancer)? For example, if a drug had an NNT of 50 for heart attacks, then 50 people have to take the drug in order to prevent one heart attack. For more information click on the link below:

Scientists Say Medieval Beliefs About Urine may Contain Drop of Truth
Medieval physicians believed that they could diagnose disease by holding up a flask of the patient’s urine to the light and squinting at it. Now, scientists at Imperial College London believe they could have been on to something. Researchers have completed the first worldwide study of the metabolites (breakdown products) that are found in urine, reflecting the diet, inheritance and the lifestyle of the people from whom it came. They call such studies “metabolomics.” The team believes that the research may provide the basis for a “metabolome-wide association” approach to help to understand interactions between lifestyles, environment and genes and how they determine diseases. Mom’s Diet May Influence Baby Gender
What a woman eats before pregnancy may play a role in whether the baby is a boy or a girl, according to surprising new research. Women who have a hearty appetite, eat a lot of potassium-rich foods like bananas, and don’t skip breakfast appear more likely to have a boy. Previous studies have also shown that male embryos do best with longer exposure to nutrient-rich lab cultures. It could be that more nutrients are needed to build boys than girls. Women who ate at least one bowl of breakfast cereal daily were 87 percent more likely to have boys than those who ate no more than one bowlful per week, a possible sign that they were skipping breakfast. Thousands Have Been Harmed by Lasik Eye Surgery
Patients harmed by Lasik eye surgery recently told federal health advisers stories of severe eye pain, blurred vision and even a son's suicide. The advisers recommended that the government warn more clearly about the risks of the popular operations. About 700,000 Americans a year undergo the elective laser surgery. Of those, several thousand suffer serious, life-changing side effects, such as worse vision, severe dry eye, glare, and inability to drive at night. Top 10 Crimes Against your Body
People have been pushing the limits of the human body since the beginning of time. Body piercing, tattoos, ear stretching, and more were used in ancient cultures as a rite of passage, to express spiritual beliefs and, often, to display varying cultural ideals of beauty.

In the modern world, body modification is still popular, though not without risk. For further information click on the link below:

Juicing may boost a fruit's antioxidant punch: study
02-May-2008 - Long term supplementation of antioxidant-rich apples and purple grapes, particularly in juice form, may prevent artery hardening, researchers from France have reported for the first time. Measures of atherosclerosis were reduced in hamsters with high cholesterol levels following consumption of the fruit and their respective juices, but the benefits were significantly greater for the juices, report researchers from the University of Montpellier 1 and 2, and the Victor Ségalen University in Bordeaux 2 in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. Why Are Bats Dying?
Just as news of the massive bee die off is fading from the news (although not actually ending), news of mass bat deaths are just starting to hit the headlines. The loss of bats could be an environmental catastrophe, as they are the world's greatest insect eaters -- devouring up to half their weight in insects every day. The epicenter of the bat die-off is New York. Reports started with hikers noticing dead and dying bats littered outside the caves where they hibernate. Chemo drugs 'destroy brain cells'
Drugs used to destroy cancer cells may actually be more harmful to healthy cells in the brain, research suggests.

A team from New York's University of Rochester found several types of key brain cell were highly vulnerable to the drugs. They say it might help explain side effects such as seizures and memory loss associated with chemotherapy - collectively dubbed 'chemo brain'. The research is published in the Journal of Biology. Head Lice Linked to Leukaemia
French scientists are warning parents not to use chemical shampoos to rid their children of head lice. The results, they say, could be an increased risk of developing leukaemia.

The French research group INSERM conducted the study, looking at 280 children who had recently been diagnosed with leukaemia. Their mothers were interviewed on a number of subjects including any use of insecticidal shampoos, as well as the use of pesticides and fungicides in the home and garden.

Based on responses to the interview questions, scientists said they can conclude that using insecticidal shampoos could almost double the risk of developing leukaemia. They also found the risk of developing the disease was almost twice as likely in children whose mothers said they had used insecticides in the home while pregnant and after birth.

The research did not specify any of the lice shampoo brands used by the children, but cited ingredients such as malathion, pyrethroid and lindane which are often in such products.

Leukaemia is a malignant disease of the bone marrow and blood. It is characterised by the uncontrolled accumulation of blood cells. The Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society estimates there were nearly 35,000 new cases of leukaemia in the United States in 2005. Most cases occur in older adults, with more than half of all cases occurring after age 67.

The Vitamin You Need to Prevent Prostate Cancer
Increased intake of vitamin K2 may reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 35 percent, according to the results of European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). The potential benefits of K2 were most pronounced for advanced prostate cancer. Vitamin K1 intake did not offer any prostate benefits. The findings were based on data from more than 11,000 men taking part in the EPIC Heidelberg cohort. It adds to a small but ever-growing body of science supporting the potential health benefits of vitamin K for bone, blood, skin, and now prostate health. Diabetics Can Reverse Their Atherosclerosis
Aggressive measures to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels below current targets can help to prevent -- and potentially even reverse -- hardening of the arteries in adults with type 2 diabetes. Hardening of the arteries, also known as atherosclerosis, is the number one cause of heart disease. A three-year study of nearly 500 participants was the first to compare two treatment targets for LDL ("bad") cholesterol and systolic blood pressure levels in people with diabetes. Iodine Deficiency and Its Link to Diseases in the Body
Naturally occurring iodine is a rare trace element that was discovered in the 1800's by a French chemist. It was found to be effective in the treatment of goiter (swelling of the thyroid gland), and in 1924 the United States initiated its use as an additive to common table salt to address the high incidence of iodine deficiency. As a result, the once-common condition of goiter in the U.S. was virtually eliminated. For further information click on the link below:

Merck Masked Vioxx Risk, Hired Study Ghostwriters
April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Merck & Co. conducted its own studies on the pain pill Vioxx, then hired companies to ghostwrite reports for medical journals that appeared under the names of scientists who didn't do the majority of the research, court records show. In many cases, Merck's involvement in producing the data wasn't disclosed, according to two articles in the current Journal of the American Medical Association relying on court papers. The documents disclosed by Merck in two Vioxx lawsuits also suggest the company's control of the data allowed it to downplay the risk of death from Vioxx in patients with Alzheimer's disease, the journal's editors said in an editorial.
